Teresa Towne

Content creator, blogger, social media expert

Teresa Towne is a proud Native American, a mother, grandmother, and an advocate for the oppressed.

Location: Sitting in my car outside of the neighborhood market. I’m here to buy lottery tickets, or as my Dad called it, ‘paying for hope.’

What I do:  I am a part of the NuuED team. I create content, blogs, and (as with any startup company) do whatever it takes to further our cause and help our team.

My Learning Personality is: I was surprised to learn that I am predominantly a visual learner, with aural as my next highest percentage.

Makes sense though because as a student, classes with lectures that included graphs, charts, or movies were much easier for me than those without.

Current favorite technology

I am ashamed to say I am addicted to online casino games. (Hmm.. disturbing pattern emerging…lotto, casino…oh my!)

What’s the biggest learning leap you’ve ever taken?

Literally ‘leaping’ into the deep end of a swimming pool at 5 yrs old with the instructions, ‘Take a deep breath,  jump in, and when you come up, move your arms and legs in circles to keep your head above water.  Don’t worry, I’ll save you if you can’t. ‘

Just the right motivation for a member of a very competitive family.

What have you had to learn to get where you are today?

Triumph over adversity along any path is more rewarding than an easy journey.
The outcome of doing the right thing the wrong way can lead to failure or if you are fortunate…innovation.

What is your favorite failure, and what did it teach you?

I bought a new dress and was really ‘feeling myself’ as I walked up the street to the sound of whistles, cheers, and car horns. It wasn’t until I saw my reflection in the glass doors of my office building that I realized the entire back of my dress was tucked into my pantyhose and I had generously exposed myself to four blocks of traffic.

Lesson #1: Too much confidence can sometimes lead to failure.

Lesson #2: Laughing at yourself is very therapeutic.

What new belief, habit, skill, or behavior, which you have learned in the last 5 years, has impacted your life in the most positive way?

After surviving cancer, I have learned not to ‘sweat the small stuff’ and to look for the joy in each day.

Why I Support NuuED

“As the child of educators and a Native American, I have seen firsthand the disparities in the resources available for marginalized groups. I am committed to helping change that by providing easily accessible and affordable educational technology to all learners.

To witness the transformation of a child after using Spiral from despondent, to hopeful, and filled with a desire to learn and grow, is remarkably rewarding.”

What are you learning about right now?

I am taking an online computer graphics course. I’m finding you actually can teach an ‘old dog’ new tricks.

What is an unusual thing about you?

I dance in competition at Pow Wows. I am from a Northern tribe, the Numa (Paiute) and because of that, I dance in the Northern Traditional style. It is a way to honor my ancestors.

How do you recharge?  How do you reboot yourself?

I kick back and listen to music.

What are you currently reading, or what’s something you’d recommend?

Crazy Brave: A Memoir by Joy Harjo

If 100 of your closest friends together in a movie theater, what movie would you share with them?

I would show them the movie A Man Named Pearl. It’s the story of Pearl Fryar. It’s inspiring, uplifting, and positive.

What is the strangest way you’ve ever learned something?

I learned how to determine what bait to use when fishing by checking the stomach contents of the first fish caught. Your basic creekside coroner lesson.

If you had control of all the billboards in Times Square for 5 minutes, what message would you share?

Be brave…be humble…be kind.

If you didn’t have your current gig, what job would you most like to have?

I would like to help women that are experiencing domestic violence or have survived it as I have.

Fill in the blank:  I’d love to see everyone in the world answer these questions.

I know we would find commonalities.
